IoT Core

Google Cloud informed their clients today about the retiring of IoT Core - a fully managed service to easily and securely connect, manage, and ingest data from globally dispersed devices. Clients will have 365 days to find an alternative solution before IoT Core officially retired on 16 August 2023.

IoT Core was introduced in January 2018 as a fully managed service to help securely connect and manage IoT devices at scale.

Over the past 4 years, it has been adopted by different businesses to solve their problems with IoT management or use it as their main IoT solutions. Some sample case studies of IoT Core can be listed below:

  • Control embedded devices
  • Facilitate device update management
  • End-to-end IoT solution
  • Develop IoT application on Google Cloud

Alternative solutions

As the service will be retired in August 2023, clients who have their IoT solutions running on Google Cloud (backed by IoT Core) need to find alternative solutions and start their migration.

1.  Azure IoT - Internet of Things Platform

The Azure Internet of Things (IoT) is a collection of Microsoft-managed cloud services that connect, monitor and control billions of IoT assets. In simpler terms, an IoT solution is made up of one or more IoT devices that communicate with one or more back-end services hosted in the cloud. Some popular use cases with Azure IoT:

  • Real-time monitoring and performance analysis of power plants
  • Monorail monitoring solution on the cloud with Azure IoT Hub
  • Developing high-quality medical applications with MedApp using Xamarin, Mobile DevOps, and IoT
  • IoT drone-based solution
  • Building a tire monitoring solution

More about the service can be found here: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/solutions/iot/

Connect, analyze, and automate from the edge to the cloud

2. AWS IoT Core

AWS IoT provides the cloud services that connect your IoT devices to other devices and AWS cloud services. AWS IoT provides device software that can help you integrate your IoT devices into AWS IoT-based solutions. If your devices can connect to AWS IoT, AWS IoT can connect them to the cloud services that AWS provides.

Use cases:

  • Monitor and manage industrial operations
  • Build differentiated consumer products
  • Innovate with automotive data
  • Develop safety products

Conclusions

Azure IoT & AWS IoT Core are 2 alternative solutions among several IoT solutions. Not sure why Google Cloud deciced to stop the service of IoT Core, but no matter what the reason is, we need to start looking for other services and migrate before the deadline.
